MIMCOL was originally setup with the aim of restructuring a large number of government investments and whilst some of these companies were deemed to be non viable, and were thus wound down and liquidated, viable ones were hived off to the private sector. Since the 1990’s the role of MIMCOL has developed into an important strategic consultant to the government and parastatal companies. Nowadays MIMCOL acts as lead advisor to the government’s privatisation unit, having spearheaded the privatisation of entities such as the Malta International Airport, the National Lottery and Maltapost.
Falling under the responsibility of the Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Business headed by the Hon Dr. Chris Cardona, MIMCOL today is still assisting the government in its strategic investments, as well as being advisor to Malta Government Investments (MGI) subsidiaries as well as consultancy arm to the Cabinet of Ministers and other agencies.
MIMCOL is also encouraging private investment in Malta through the Seed Investment Scheme.
The Seed Investment Scheme offers incentives in the form of tax credits to investors in return for investment in a qualifying Maltese start-up or early stage companies. The scheme offers young entrepreneurs a route to vital funding in the initial stages of their project by effectively minimising the risk to investors.
